Food Preservation Workshop at Wyoming Territorial Prison

Fall is upon us, and as the vegetables are harvested from gardens, one wonders how to eat it all.  Food preservation may be the answer.  If you are interested in preserving food at home, come to “Preserving Fundamentals” at 3 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site, a free educational workshop about your options.

Diane Saenz, nutrition and food safety educator for the University of Wyoming Extension Office, is a food enthusiast who loves to talk about growing, cooking, eating and preserving foods.  Saenz provides programming in the areas of nutrition and food safety.

Territorial Prison hosts competitive horse event

Jump the “Big House” – Equestrian event at Wyoming Territorial Prison

Horses and riders from across the nation will “Jump the Big House” this Friday through Sunday competing in Three-day Eventing at the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site.

This weekend, the public is invited to watch these remarkable athletes compete in Three-day Eventing which is a competition made up of a trio of riding disciplines: dressage, cross-country jumping and show jumping.

Each discipline has its own day of competition where riders and horses of all different levels compete against their peers. The highest levels of competition occur at the summer Olympic Games. Riders and horses who participate in eventing must master a variety of skills even at the lowest levels of competition.

The Windy Wyoming chapter of the regional Mountain States Eventing Association (MSEA) organizes an annual licensed event for various levels of competitors.  Windy Wyoming is settling in for their third year at this unique venue, the historic Wyoming Territorial Prison.

Check out the national organization, United States Eventing Association for fun facts, photos and news about the sport including the recent Olympic Games results.

“Horses have a history here at this site,” Site Superintendent Deborah Amend said. “Percheron draft horses were used by the University of Wyoming in their breeding programs and as work horses when the Agricultural Experiment Station was located here.

“So having a variety of horse breeds here competing this weekend including Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods, Mustangs as well as various pony, draught and mixed breeds will be marvelous to watch.”

Admission fees will apply this weekend to see the Future Event Horse competition for 1-2 year old horses on Friday, September 14.  On Saturday, September 15, Dressage competition will run 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then Cross-country Jumping competition will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The competition will conclude on Sunday, September 16 with the Show Jumping competition from 9 a.m. until noon.
